Terminal One Redevelopment, Newark, NJ

AxD was retained by STV to undertake vertical circulation elements (VCE) design and coordination for the new $1.41 billion terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport. The design is intended to accommodate the airport’s growing capacity while meeting the changing demands of passengers and airlines for years to come.

The new Newark Airport Terminal One will feature 1 million square feet of space with 33 gates spread across a two-level T-shaped building. Once completed in 2022, Terminal One will replace the adjacent Terminal A building and will include a more efficient check in process, ample space for passenger amenities and an efficient security screening process. The terminal is expected to meet LEED Silver energy and sustainability standards and is designed to provide flexibility for long-term value.

The team was chosen by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey based on their combined experience and expertise in the successful delivery of design-build projects – with STV as the Architect of Record and Grimshaw Architects as the Design Lead. AxD coordinated with STV, Grimshaw Architects, Tutor Perini (Design/Builder) and the PANYNJ to provide the public vertical circulation elements design package per contract on schedule and has performed construction administration services on a time and material basis as required, often with short notice and response periods.
